INTRODUCTION
Christian Financial Ministries is partnered with The Karis Group
to help you reduce and repay your major medical bills. The Karis
Group provides a safety net primarily for those who are un-insured or
under-insured. Over the
last seven years, The Karis Group has worked with large groups and thousands
of individuals
nationwide, to save millions of dollars. If you have a medical bill repayment
need, The Karis
Group may be able to help you.
Over 60 million people in the United States are either un-insured or
under-insured. Many of these individuals and families are not able
to take advantage of health insurance benefits for a variety of reasons
including:
- They are self-employed,
- Their employer offers little or no health care
benefits,
- They are
forced to opt out of employer benefits because of the
high cost,
- They are insured but can not
afford the cost to insure the family,
- They are part-time or non-salary
and do not qualify for employer
programs, and/or
- They or family members have pre-existing medical
conditions.
Even with discounts available on physician and other health care services,
some people are still
unable to pay their medical bills. Many will put off recommended treatments
because they do not
have the financial resources to pay the bills.

ACTUAL CASE STUDIES
- John owned his own construction company. Medical
bills were the last things on his
mind, and he had no insurance. But a symptom-free aneurysm burst,
causing a stroke, a
serious medical emergency. Following airlift to his local acute care
hospital, it was
decided that John needed care at a major regional center. Four weeks
later the total bills
showed as
- MediFlight $9,000
- First hospital $10,000+ for first 24 hours of care
- Second hospital $20,000+ for following week of inpatient
care
- Rehab unit $17,000 for two weeks of rehabilitation
At this point John was introduced to The Karis Group Advocacy
services. He made too much money to be considered by Medicaid,
and he had no resources set aside for such a medical catastrophe.
His counselor discussed his situation with all four major providers.
The results were as follows:
- MediFlight agreed to settle for $600 paid
as a lump sum
- First hospital settled for $2,000
paid as a lump sum
- Second hospital agreed to a 75% reduction
in the bill, and the remaining $5,000
could be
paid off with manageable monthly payments
- The rehab unit also agreed to a 75% write off and manageable
monthly payments
Savings: Around $42,000 and the peace of mind
on how to deal with the remaining balances.
- Tom, a 20-year-old university student was injured in a motorcross
accident. The
family thought that he was covered through their insurance,
but discovered to their horror
that off-road motorbikes were specifically excluded. The ER
room bills, with ambulance
and MRI’s came to over $3000. Thankfully, Tim was found
to be fine.
But that still left $3000 in bills to pay. Normally, this family
would have been able to
cover such relatively small bills. But the family business
had recently taken a serious hit,
and cash was very short.
The Karis counselor approached the hospital,
the ambulance company and the doctors on
this family’s behalf. The hospital was willing to see
if the family’s
current income would
qualify them for a hospital charity program. Discovering that
the hospital program was
able to write off the family’s bills, the ambulance company
agreed to do the same. The
ER doctors agreed to a simple payment plan.
Savings: Around
$2500 and the dignity of a hard working family.
- Baby Cleo was born with a congenital
problem needing expensive injection therapy
costing around $7000 in her first month of life. The
family had been paying this off at
the rate of $25 per week. Then they went to The Karis group.
The Karis counselor
negotiated with the clinic. As a result, the clinic agreed
to write off $25 for every $25
payment until the debt was cleared.
Savings: $3500 of the $7000 total
- Nancy, an immigrant from Vietnam,
had her mother visiting her for a few weeks.
Unfortunately, while the mother was here, she needed a brief hospital
treatment costing
around $3,000. The hospital was chasing Nancy to pay these bills within
six months.
Nancy could not afford this payment plan.
Enter The Karis group. After
negotiations, the hospital only agreed to a 10% reduction.
But the Karis counselor was also able to help Nancy and her family
find
a way to raise
the balance through friends and family members, and so
the bills were paid off very
quickly.
Savings: $300 and six months of aggravation.
- Shelly came to The Karis
Group with $26,000 in old hospital bills that she
was not able to pay. The Karis counselor was able to help
Shelly and her family to raise $13,000,
which the hospital agreed to accept as full and final
payment of her bills.
Savings: $13,000
